Attention: The entire eastern flank of the mountain ridge must be flown around in the direction of Spittal. One of the most beautiful views over Spittal and Lake Millstätter See is from Goldeck. With the Goldeckbahn you can get from Spittal to the starting points. A toll road also leads up to the Goldeck. However, it is better to reach the launch sites by cable car, because from the Seetal car park at the end of the beautiful panoramic road you have to climb up to the summit and the launch sites in just under 1 hour. Around the green summit at an altitude of almost 2,100 m above sea level, you have a fantastic view of the entire mountain panorama, all the way to the Großglockner, which makes every flyer's heart beat faster. In north or west weather conditions the Goldeck is an ideal alternative to the Tschiernock. With the right wind strength, you can take off in almost any direction in this flying area. The launch sites are more suitable for hang gliders. There is a wooden ramp at each launch site. For paragliders, the main launch site to the north, just above the mountain station, is the most interesting. Especially with north wind the Goldeck at the end of the Tauern valley is an ideal bouncing slope. If there is a north wind you can soar back and forth in the summit area. The north orientation also explains why the Goldeck is not an ideal cross-country mountain. The relief is also not easy. Experienced pilots can nevertheless go cross-country from here. The most frequently flown routes lead along the northern flanks in the direction of Villach. All other take-off sites require a high level of experience for paraglider pilots, as mountain ridges and flanks have to be flown around in each case. The large landing area is located near the valley station of the Goldeckbahn in the Spittal-Auen. Please note that this landing area is also used by helicopters. Due to a conflict with the local farmer, the take off is currently closed. It is undetermined when take off is opened again. Flat start meadow. Attention: At the moment the starting places are not allowed to be used! (as of 2011) The first stop in Carinthia via the Tauern motorway, coming from the north side of the Alps, is Spittal an der Drau. Above Seeboden, a toll road leads to the Tschiernock massif. By car we go up the serpentines to the valley station of the chairlift at the Hansbauer. From there you normally climb the next 400 metres to the Tschiernock summit with the chairlift. Since last year, the chairlift has unfortunately been closed due to its age. There are now two ways to get into the air. Either one chooses the sporty variant and climbs the Tschiernock on foot in just 90 minutes from the Hansbauern. Or for those who don't want to take the strain on themselves, there is a wonderful meadow launch site for kites and paragliders west of the Hansbauerhütte. When flying from Hansbauer take-off, paraglider pilots in particular should not underestimate the distance and length of the flight path to the landing site. The landing place can hardly be seen from the starting place, among other things because the flight path leads "around the corner". You should therefore choose a wind situation for your start, let the upwinds be expected, or be satisfied with a pleasure flight with a wonderful view of the entire Millstättersee area in weak wind situations. From midday onwards, this flying area offers good conditions for cross-country flights with the best thermals.
