PG/HG - ASL: 565m (HG can use take-off ramp at ASL of 850m)Lijak is one of the most favorite take-off places in Slovenia.Its special location offers an extraordinary number of flying days throughout the year. There are very good weather conditions for flight also during winter time; even when in the nearby Vipava valley blows strong bora, Lijak is quite well protected. Also, in the winter time the cloud base can be higher than in summer. This geat take-off place is situated above a karstic spring of the brook Lijak, on a sharp edge of the Trnovo landscape rising over the characteristic, funnel-shaped steep slope – hence the name; Lijak is a Slovenian word for funnel. Park your car at the top and then walk about 10 minutes to the SP, bench, garbage can and information board from the local club available. 2019: the enlarged SP is now fully usable; but the grass is sometimes a bit high... Ideal if you are looking for some peace and quiet 'away' from the many pilots ;-) The Lijak offers similar conditions as the famous flying area Bassano in Italy. But here it is comparatively much more relaxed. Along the edge of the slope you can soar wonderfully in the evening. During the day, a useful thermal develops, inviting cross-country flights to the east. It is quite easy to walk along the 30 km edge. With a good view the view goes up to the Mediterranean Sea. The landing area is generous. Information, landing badge (15 Euro / year - 2010), burgers and landing beer are available at the landing kiosk ("Njam Njam"). The take-off and landing fees are paid to the club. There's an information board at the launch site. Please note the requirements. Drive to the starting point by car or shuttle in the direction of Trnovo. A little before the village of Trnovo there is a car park on the right. Continue on foot (10 minutes slightly downwards). The starting place was prepared super by the local club. On the paraglider launch site you can also take off with a hang-glider. For hang gliders, however, the ramp on the slope edge is better in an easterly direction. The ramp can be reached directly via Trnovo and then on the forest road. The Lijak has other qualities besides flying. Many paths lead through the fantastic beech forests, which are perfect for mountain biking. This takeoff place is one of the first and most popular takeoffs for free flyers in Slovenia. Hanggliders like it, because you can drive up very close to this place. The gliding on Kovk is possible throwgh all the year. The good winds are W,SW,S,SSE. The area Ajdovscina / Kovk is situated in a beautiful landscape above the plain. In clear weather view up to the Mediterranean Sea. Driveway around the mountain. In Gozd after the village turn left and continue on a small road up the hill. Small parking lot and better the last meters on foot. For hang gliders there is the possibility to continue on the field path. The starting meadow at the edge of the slope is a huge rough lawn. The slope flank is thermally very active. At noon with under very turbulent. The hillside edge offers possibilities for routes to Lijak or in the direction of Vipava. The landing place should be approached in time. The landing meadow is very large. East of the landing meadow there is a nice restaurant - Pizzeria Anja (pilot meeting point). The terrain is susceptible to the bora (very strong wind). If this is the case, a visit to Vipava (beautiful town) is recommended. Takeoff is located on the hill above city Cerklje, on about 1300m asl. After about 25minutes of driving with your car you get almost to the takeoff. Usually there are couple of cars parked, and you can easily leave your car there.The takeoff is not that hard. If there is a W or S wind blowing you choose upper start, and if there's E wind you have to go to the lower start which is located about 200m lower.
